Static Observation No. 3
After receiving some background information about Islamic tile patterns and Escher's lizards, I noticed that the puzzle below the robots is actually a set of different colored lizards all connected together. I also noticed that there was, in fact, a rubber lizard perched on top of this pattern which I can connect to the photo of Escher's lizards shown during the background story. While I noticed the lizard in previous observations, I did not write it down as I could not find a way to incorporate it into the narrative I was trying to create for the set of objects. Understanding where these objects came from and how they were connected was instrumental for me as I was able to better understand and look for the patterns on the table.
At the same time, however, I wonder if looking for these patterns knowing the backstory influenced how I perceived the lizard and the puzzle. While the information allowed me, the observer, to make sense of what I was seeing, it also led me down a certain path that I may not have gone down the first time. Was I a more objective observer the first time? Or did I miss crucial elements that allowed me to better understand the objects once I had more time and a backstory to ground my observations in?
